Dr. Jennifer Grim is Assistant Professor of Music in studio flute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. UNLV offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in both music performance and education. Students in the flute studio participate in weekly lessons and repertoire classes, in addition to performing in wind ensembles and the UNLV symphony orchestra. The weekly individual lessons focus on the student’s artistic and technical development while the repertoire classes give the student performance experience in a supportive peer environment.
Major areas of focus in the weekly lesson include:
Tone development - helping students achieve their optimal sound in all registers and dynamics.
Technique - developing fast fingers and clean, quick articulation.
Musicality - learning how to shape a musical phrase from all genres of music.
Major areas of focus in the repertoire class include:
Orchestral excerpts and auditioning skills, including mock auditions and seminars.
Memorization projects - learning how to fully comprehend and internalize a piece of music and deliver it in front of your peers.
Specialized repertoire, such as baroque performance practice and contemporary music.
In addition, UNLV students are required to participate in large ensembles and chamber music groups. Please visit the UNLV website for more information about the ensembles and groups associated with UNLV: http://music.unlv.edu.
STUDYING IN LAS VEGAS
There are many benefits to studying music at UNLV. As one of the most rapidly growing cities in the United States, the need for music educators in the region is very high. In addition, there are many performance opportunities in the area, including freelance orchestras, chamber music venues, and positions in pit orchestras for musicals and shows on the Strip. Among the professional organizations and venues in Las Vegas are the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the UNLV Performing Arts Center. Students can also benefit from arts communities in the greater southwest. Located just 4 hours from Los Angeles and Flagstaff, and 5 hours from San Diego and Phoenix, students can easily, for example, travel to hear the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Diego and Phoenix Symphonies.
